About Us

The Hampshire Skeptics Society is a non-profit organisation for the promotion of science, reason and critical thinking, humanism and a secular life. We run the Winchester Skeptics In The Pub group who meet at 7.30pm on the last Thursday of every month at The Winchester Discovery Centre.
What is a skeptic ? Dr. Steven Novella sums it up quite well:

A skeptic is one who prefers beliefs and conclusions that are reliable and valid to ones that are comforting or convenient, and therefore rigorously and openly applies the methods of science and reason to all empirical claims, especially their own.
A skeptic provisionally proportions acceptance of any claim to valid logic and a fair and thorough assessment of available evidence, and studies the pitfalls of human reason and the mechanisms of deception so as to avoid being deceived by others or themselves.
Skepticism values method over any particular conclusion.

If you would like to contact us regarding an event or another matter then please drop us a quick email.
We are currently looking for volunteers for the committee to help with the society organisation so if you would like to be a part of this fantastic skeptical group and get involved please let us know.
Dave Hughes
Dave is an electronics engineer, photographer and drummer. Also a serious physics nut and general all ’round Übergeek. Dave is the President of the Hampshire Skeptics Society board.
Vice President & Events Organiser
Crispian Jago
Crispian is an Orwell Prize longlisted blogger who enjoys dipping the reason stick in a fresh pile of steaming dog dirt and waving it in the general direction of irrational nonsense. You can see his blog here : Science, Reason and Critical Thinking. Crispian is the Vice President of the Hampshire Skeptics Society board.
Committee Members
Becky John
Becky. Details to follow.
Dr. Clio Bellenis
Also on the committee, Clio is a retired medic, still doing some work with the NHS. She says she can’t think of anything clever or witty to say about herself, so we’ll just leave it at that.
Sean Ellis
Sean is a regular podcaster, member of OfQuack the official quackery watchdog and lives in a semi-detached castle in Epping Forest, allegedly. You can catch him on Twitter and on his website.
Jonathan McAlroy
Jonathan is a father of two Wintonians. He has been attending Winchester Skeptics since 2009. He has a small collection of quips and jokes which he rolls out on a regular basis much to the amusement of his friends and family.
Malcolm Stein
Malcolm is a former software developer. He has run a number of successful small businesses and is a keen skeptic with the ambition to exert total control of his loft as soon as he remembers where he left it.
William Vine
William used to be a chemist about six half-lives ago, and maintains an interest in life sciences ‘cos physics is too hard. He is skeptical about skepticism and is seeking evidence to confirm or deny whether he is merely an app on his mobile phone. He includes iconoclasm amongst his hobbies and character flaws.
Official Photographer
Paul Jenkins
Paul Jenkins
Paul recently retired from architectural practice and should therefore now have more time for photography and other pursuits. You can find his Winchester Skeptics photos on Flickr:
