Announcing Skeptics of the Round Table

So, we all enjoy the monthly meetings: listening to interesting speakers, having a little chat with like-minded people – but the evenings are always over so quickly …

Well, we can help with that. Going back to our roots (or should I say returning to the pub) it is my honour and pleasure to announce the new social meet-up of the Hampshire Skeptics Society:

Skeptics of the Round Table

We shall be stripping back the concept to “what it says on the tin”: a pub, some skeptics (hopefully plenty), but no speakers – just us chittering and chattering. Just show up, grab a drink and join us for stimulating discussions (or a good old laugh).

The first date for our new social meet-up will be Wednesday, 11 April 2012 from 7:00 PM, and following that we are planning to hold a SotRT meeting on the second Wednesday of each month (nicely in between the speaker meetings, just to keep the withdrawal symptoms in check …).
The first meeting will be at The Black Boy pub in Winchester:

1 Wharf Hill
SO23 9MQ
There are also two car parks very close to the pub.

Watch out for the hashtag #WinSotRT on Twitter for future updates.

We are all looking forward to meeting you there!

Excellent idea, and thanks for putting it into action so quickly after announcing it the other night!
I’m afraid I’ll be missing the first one, but I’ll definitely turn up to others.

Do they have a round table at the Black Boy, or will we have to skirmish the big one away from the Great Hall? Food is not bad at the Black Boy, as I recall.

  • Food is great at The Black Boy. We may have to “acquire” a round table. I’ll see what I can do 😉

Would come to this but I don’t know anyone, would be nice if there was something to encourage people to mingle. It’s pretty hard to get chatting with other people during the intermission at the library.

  • Come along even if you don’t know anyone, you’ll be able to find us because we’ll have a sign or two and you’ll receive a warm welcome.
We will be there from 7pm so turn up any time after that and you’ll be sure of having someone there.
You can also ask at the bar and they’ll tell you where we are.
Once we’re established we also plan on having things like informal quizzes and a skeptic crowdsourced topic to start off some conversations.

Feel free to bring people with you, especially if you think they may prefer not to come to the SitP meetings.

There’s now an event on the Facebook page : Hampshire Skeptics on Facebook so if you ‘like’ the page you’ll get regular updates.

    See you there 🙂

Adding to Dave’s reply: I see it as my personal task to make sure nobody feels left out at the Skeptics of the Round Table meetings.
So, when you come, search me out and I will take care of introducing you to a few people to get you started.

Your comment actually confirms a suspicion I already had about the Discovery Center not lending itself to socializing during the break – at least for new comers. Hopefully we will not have this problem at the Black Boy.
